Viewer Questions #1

Tablet Tip:
Show #:
25
Description:
In this episode of Tablet Tips, Jared answers view submitted questions including: should you use Gmail as online backup, what type of printer to purchase for school, and a tip about student discounts when purchasing from Toshiba.

This episode of Tablet Tips covered several viewer submitted questions.

First, Nish asks if you can use Gmail to backup files on your computer. "Can you simply use Gmail to store our documents by manually uploading them... is there a risk with that? Is there a limit as to how much can be stored?"

While it might be comforting to put files onto Gmail that are highly important, such as assignments worth many, many points just to feel comfortable, Gmail isn't a robust solution. Services such as Carbonite, Mozy, and Jungle Disk provide true, robust, online backup. With Mozy having a free 2GB version, there is no reason for a student to not use some type of backup solution. These solutions were discussed in depth in an episode of Tablet Tips, Getting Organized: Online Backup.

An anonymous submitter asks: "Should I get a black and white laser printer or a color inkjet printer for college?"

This question really comes down to personal needs. While I use a black and white HP LaserJet printer, other students may need to be able to print in color. When submitting most assignments, typically they are text with few to no graphics. Text looks better printed from a laser printer and some professors may even require that papers be printed from a laser.

However, it is also important to mention Universities, including UofL, provide many different places to print on campus. These may be paid, but often times your department or school could provide you with a limited number of prints. It is worth asking around to determine if you have options outside of your own personal printer.

Overall, it may be less expensive to use a laser printer if you are going to be printing a higher volume of pages.

Rocean emails in a suggestion for students purchasing a Tablet form Toshiba: You can purchase Toshiba computers with an 11% student discount if you call them and confirm that you are a student.

It is always important to look into potential student discounts before making any major purchase. Many vendors have a relationship with UofL, but even those that do not, such as Toshiba, can provide a discount.

STUG is always looking forward to receiving email questions. Typically, we will respond with an individual response very quickly, but look for more episodes centered around questions submitted by you, the viewers.
