Welcome Freshmen: Brief Tablet PC Problem Marathon

Tablet Tip:
Show #:
24
Description:
In this episode of Tablet Tips, Jared discusses his experiences fixing the Table PC problems for the incoming freshmen at Speed School.

After a break while on co-op, Jared is back producing episodes of Tablet Tips.

This first edition for the fall semester looks at some of the problems of the incoming freshmen. After taking some time to help out the incoming freshmen in both the Introduction to Engineering class and a few of the Calculus classes, Jared looks at some of the problems he has fixed.

Jared posted on his personal blog a few days ago discussing these problems (Starting the Semester off Sprinting + STUG) and received a response from Brian Jones. In this response he mentioned some of the problems that students were having.

The first problem was students with Gateway computers having difficulty connecting to the DyKnow server. This problem was very random. While a firm solution was never found, some of the instances just corrected themselves and started working. However, Brian recommended that those computers still submit their log files through the DyKnow client so that the problem could be further looked into and a possible solution could be found.

The next problem was that student accounts were not properly set up on the server. This was a larger problem cause by a misconfiguration in IT and has since been corrected.

The next problem was not one with DyKnow rather OneNote. Specifically, students were having dificulty using the Send to OneNote 2007 printer functionality. While students with a 64 bit version of Vista are out of luck, OneNote 64 bit print driver, there were several students with a 32 bit version of Vista still experiencing problems. It was recommended to these students that they repair or reinstall their version of Office 2007, but this only fixed a subset of the problems.

Lastly, wireless has been a cause of much confusion. These problems are almost always due to configuration. The University of Louisville has information on their Wireless Network v2.0. While their resources are are great start, they have been causing some problems with their advice. The University has been recommending students use the Odyssey wireless client, even under Vista where it is not necessary. While it may successfully work for some individuals, it has not seen a high success rate at Speed School. It is best to simply connect to the Wireless using Vista'a built in wireless utility. However, students running Windows XP and not using a third part wireless controller, such as the Intel PROSet, may find it easier to use Odyssey to connect rather than Windows built in utility.
